Bangladesh Needs Eco Friendly, Fair Trade Clothing

If you have tried buying clothes at a Bebe or Topshop shop, you have probably worn the handiwork of a Bangladeshi woman. Bangladesh is one of the major exporters of apparel to international labels in the U.S. and London. It is also one of the places where garment factories, and there are about 4,500 of them there, are more concerned about profit as opposed to worker’s welfare.

Bangladesh’s clothing production industry centers around the urban areas of Dhaka and Chittagong and the emerging Nirsingdi district. Factories there have been a constant target of workers rights and fair trade activists because of their substandard working conditions, below-living wages and absence of standard workers’ benefits. Just recently, a United States rights advocacy group criticized a jeans factory that supplied products to German label Metro Group for allegedly “overworking to death” an 18-year-old woman.

Casualties of Bangladesh’s criticism-laden garment industry are not limited to occasional deaths like this. In 2001, around 52 workers at sweatshop factory, Choudhury Knitwears in Narsingdi died when a fire razed the structure to the ground. It was night, and the factory owner had locked the gates to make sure the workers stayed put. Of the 52 victims, most were young women while ten of them were children.

A similar incident happened in February, 2010 when a sweater factory which supplied garments to such labels as H&M went up in flames. A total of 21 workers were killed when they were trapped on the third and seventh floors. As in Choudhury Knitwear, the workers could not escape to safety because they were locked in, apparently for their own “security.”

In Bangladesh, over 2 million of its 114-million population work in the garment industry. According to the local media, only 40 percent of its garment factories have actually invested in proper fire safety equipment. If the industry does not even invest in proper equipment to protect their factories, how can we expect them to invest in the livelihood of their workers?

Unfortunately, while many global labels project themselves as socially responsible and environmentally friendly, Bangladesh, to them, remains to be a deal that is too sweet to pass up. Corporate tax rates are extremely low, labor costs are rock bottom, and production is high. The next time you see a $5 price tag on a shirt in some big box store, look to see where it was made. Perhaps then you will understand why that price can be so cheap.

But we can make a difference for places like Bangladesh. The reality is that the garment industry is extremely important to third world countries such as Bangladesh, India, China, Turkey and Pakistan. The industry creates millions of jobs for people in these countries who would otherwise have few employment options. And that’s not a bad thing. It is their exploitation for the benefit corporate profit that must stop.

By saying yes to eco friendly clothing that is also fair trade we really do help bring change to this industry, one …

Hairstyles That Lift and Camoulflage for Women Over 50

There are many hairstyle choices for women over 50 and you are only limited by a hairstyle that fits your face, color, personality, hair texture and lifestyle. With the right hairstyle, you can appear as dazzling as ever and look miraculously younger.

Here are four common problems facing women over 50 and hairstyle ideas to help you look your best.

Fine and Thinning Hair

Dry and limp hair is likely the most common problem for women 50 and above. A short hairstyle is most often considered better for women with thinning hair, as a short hairstyle tends to divert attention from the hair to the face. Fine and thin hair looks better when cut in a short bob with side swept bangs of interest. This type of hairstyle is also excellent for camouflaging a wrinkled or high forehead. And if your pressed for time a short bob only needs some gentle blow-drying after shampooing.

Expression Lines and Dropping Jaw Line

Most women want to style their hair close to their face in an attempt to hide a softening jaw line or frown lines around the eyes. However styling the hair slightly shorter around the face in layers than in back, can actually soften your facial features. Styling the layers up and away from her your face with a round brush will also add instant lift to a drooping jaw line.

Aging Neck Line

Losing that firm skin around the neckline can be frustrating not to mention it ads years to your appearance. However you can style your hair in a way to divert attention from your neckline and accentuate your best features like your sparkling eyes or high cheek bones. By keeping your hair length around the ears and in back you can soften your neck and shoulder areas. This type of style also works to shorten a long neckline as well.

Pale Skin Tone and Discoloration

Its well known that skin tone influences your hairstyle and color choice. Women over 50 tend to chop their hair and then color it dark so that the gray hair is camouflaged. You can simply avoid this by highlighting your hair, as it will deceptively cover the age.

In general women over 50 should preferably use light hair colors unless you have a pale complexion. For a pale complexion opt for brunette shades instead, as this makes you appear more youthful.

Those with olive or dark complexions are the luckiest, as they have a variety of hair colors to choose from. They look good in most colors including brown, burgundy and blond. A proper hair color should highlight your skin tone bring it alive and glowing. On the other hand, if you have made the wrong choice you will probably look tired and washed out.

Aging is inescapable; however, it does not limit your sense of beauty and your instinct to earn recognition. You can look beautiful at all ages. With this being the spirit, you can always find a perfect hairstyle for …

Wedding Tips and Ideas

1. Before your wedding, take time out to write out individual jobs for your wedding helpers on small postcards. Leave them in the (hopefully) capable hands of your best man/maid of honour and let him/her distribute them on the day, leaving you to get on with the more serious work of being pampered and enjoying your champagne breakfast!

2. Lots of people worry about using songs in the church which aren’t hymns. It’s worth remembering that as you walk up the aisle, the mass hasn’t officially started, and it ends before you sign the register and exit. There are some beautiful contemporary songs which have just the right sentiment for these parts of your day and most priests are okay with that when they’re chosen in good taste. Think about songs that mean a lot to you – you might be surprised. The most sacred part of the mass is the offertory/communion and it’s always nice to use traditional hymns here.

3. When booking your evening entertainment, make sure to allow for speeches, clearing the room after the meal, and the band set-up. For example if you have a band booked to play from 8pm till 11pm, They’ll be there to set up at about 7pm, but if they can’t get into the room, your night’s entertainment is cut short… for a typical 6pm dinner serving, 9.30 is a good start time for your band.

4. If there are particular groups of people you’d like to have a photo taken with on the day eg: school/ college friends/workmates etc. entrust someone responsible ie: best man/maid of honour to round them up at some point and bring them to you with the photographer. You’ll be so busy trying to get round everyone that you’d never get to do this yourself, but you’ll be so glad to have that special photo.

5. Before ordering flowers for the church, check if there is any other couple getting married in your church on the same day or next day, maybe you could contact them and suggest planning together to cut down on the costs.

6. If you’re on a tight budget, you might consider booking your wedding on a Monday – Thursday. Lots of companies can offer more competitive prices on these days because they’re not as much in demand as Friday or Saturday.

7. When searching for the perfect dress, don’t rule out buying a simple white/cream evening dress and having it customized to your taste, it’s amazing what you can come up with…

8. If you’re handy with the computer, why not have a bash at doing your own invitations at home.

9. Why drive yourself crazy? if you see what you want, if it fits your budget, if it fits your body, buy it! Save time avoid headaches and trust your instinct. Don’t second guess and torture yourself by going on a mission to check out every other shop in the country – just in case. If you think the first …

Fashion Jewelry Facts and Care Tips

Why we love fashion jewelry?

Fashion jewelry, also referred to as costume jewelry, is a fun and inexpensive way to express your individual style. Its low cost composition means that it is easy to get your moneys worth of use out of it and allows for a much greater variety of bolder, attention grabbing styles and colors that can be mixed and matched according to your mood or wardrobe.

Caring for your fashion jewelry

Although fashion jewelry doesn’t require much of an investment, it is still important to get the most bang for your buck by taking proper care of your costume jewelry by following a few simple steps:

– NEVER allow fashion jewelry to come in contact with oils, soaps, perfumes, or any harsh chemicals which can fade or even ruin the item.

– ALWAYS remove jewelry before sports, swimming, exercising, washing hands, showering, cleaning, doing laundry, or applying lotions or creams.

– NEVER store jewelry wet. Always dry with a soft cloth before storing.

– When cleaning, be gentle! Use a soft toothbrush and jewelry cleaner that specifically states that it is safe for costume jewelry. Make sure it does not contain acid, alcohol, or ammonia. Only use jewelry cleaner as directed. DO NOT over scrub.

– Store jewelry in a plastic ziploc bag or soft jewelry pouch away from other objects and jewelry items to avoid scratching.

– Store jewelry in a clean, dry, cool, not cold place away from heat and dust.

– Use a jewelry cloth for buffing.

– Regularly check for loose stones.

Fashion jewelry typically consists of three elements:

1. A base alloy such as brass, nickel, aluminum, tin or a combination of metals that has been altered to resemble more precious metals such as silver, gold, or platinum. This is achieved by a variety of methods including:

· tone: Have you ever heard of fashion jewelry that is referred to as silver or gold tone? This means just what the name implies. Tone refers to the color of the metal only. Gold and silver tone jewelry are silver and gold in color but contain no actual gold or silver.

· electroplating: This is probably the most common method. In this process an electric current is used to deposit a thin layer, as little as 2 micro inches (a micro inch is one millionth of an inch) onto the base alloy metal which is immersed in a salt bath solution of the precious metal that will be used to plate the object.

· layering: This method also utilizes the process of electroplating. However, the plated object is immersed for a longer period of time allowing for a much thicker layer of precious metal to be deposited. Layered gold or silver consists of approximately 20-50 micro inches of gold or silver. Although it doesn’t sound like much. This thicker layer results in a much more durable, longer lasting jewelry piece.

· overlay: This method utilizes heat rather than electricity to combine the base metal …

Your Scuba Gear And Clothing Work Against Your Smooth Movement Through The Underwater Realm

The swimsuit you wear when you dive sometimes drains your energy as you dive. Do you wear something tight fitting, or do you go for the loose boxer style swim trunk?

If you do not wear a wet suit loose swimsuits create drag as you move through the water. Drag created by the swimsuit is usually light, and hardly noticeable, but when combined with other equipment, that friction effect adds up.

I rarely see women having any trouble with friction caused by their bathing suits because their suits usually adhere well to their bodies.

If you wear loose fitting swimsuits, you do not feel it until after your dive, and the tiredness sets in, but during your dive the extra effort in fighting this drag causes you to breathe harder, and makes you suck air faster.

With each new dive out it looks I add something in the way of accessories to my dive outfit, and most of them hang from my buoyancy control device (BCD) somewhere.

For instance, even on day dives with full sunlight I always have a dive light because I like to explore cavities in rock piles, holes in walls, or small caves in the reef. I'm curious to see what lurks inside those places.

I take many notes on my dives for the articles and books I write. Right now my BCD has two dive slates hanging on it.

Add accessories like that to the BCD, which by necessity already has your compass / depth gauge / air pressure / computer console, and octopus hanging from various points, and you're talking about a lot of friction drag.

Much of this equipment is necessary for life support, and you have no option but to hang it from your BCD. The goal to seek is to secure all that stuff as tightly as safety permits so none of it floats freely, and opposes your forward motion.

The important objective is streamlining your equipment and your body so you do not work hard at moving through the water. The more stuff hanging, the more you work.

And the more you work at moving through the water, even at depth, the faster you burn through your available air supply. Faster air consumption means shorter dive times, and that means you do not get to enjoy your favorite sport – scuba diving. …

Photographer Diane Arbus

born : March 14, 1923, New York City

died : July 26, 1971, New York City (suicide)

Diane Arbus (pronounced as "Dee-an") was an American photographer known for her disturbing portraits of people on the fringes of society: sideshow freaks, nudists, transvestites. She also had a career as fashion photographer, along with her husband Allan Arbus, billing themselves as "Allan and Diane Arbus." After that she had a career on her own doing magazine work, which sometimes included her off subjects, but more often focused on celebrities or fashion. No matter what the subject was, she photographed them all in her own anti-glamorous style. Her subjects often expected to the results. Norman Mailer once said that "giving a camera to Diane Arbus is like putting a live grenade in the hands of a child." Remarkably, her productive career spanned only about the last 10 years of her life, cut short by her suicide in1971, at the age of 48.

Diane Arbus was born Diane Nemerov on March 14, 1923, to wealthy parents, Gertrude Russek and David Nemerov, a partner with Russek's department store. She had an older brother, Howard Nemerov, who would later become a well-known poet, literary critic, and Poet Laureate of the US. Her younger sister, Renee (married names: Sparkia, then Brown), became an artist. They grow up in expensive New York apartments on Central Park West and later on Park Avenue.

At age 13 she fell in love with Allan Arbus, who worked at her family's store. The family was against the match, but Diane married him as soon as she turned 18. Allan taught photography while in the Army, and he taught Diane as he learned. After the war, they began doing fashion photography work as a team, beginning with work for Russek's. Soon they were working for such clients as Esquire , Glamor , Harper's Bazaar , and Vogue . They continued this work through most of the 1950s. Diane and Allan both came to hate fashion photography for its privilege. Meanwhile, the Arbuses had two daughters, Doon, born in 1945, and Amy, born in 1954.

From about 1955 to 1957, Diane studied photography with Lisette Model at The New School in New York. Model encouraged Diane Arbus to pursue her own offbeat photographic instincts, and in 1956 Diane left the fashion business to Allan. In 1960, she had her first photo-essay published in Esquire magazine, called "The Vertical Journey." In a series of 6 photos, she juxtaposed wealth and squalor in New York City. From that time on, she was able to make a living from magazine assignments and occasional teaching jobs.

The style Arbus developed included such elements as photographing in a square format, using an on-camera flash, and taking the photo in the subject's own surroundings. She was also adept at catching her subjects in their unguarded moments. Critics often saw her work as exploitative, especially when the subject was freaks or the retarded. But Diane was drawn to these people for …
